Funny Mass Effect Edi and Joker
In a galaxy filled with Reapers invasions and tiring political situations, you need someone to provide a bit of levity. Throughout Mass Effect's original trilogy, that man is Jeff 'Joker' Moreau. While he didn't receive his nickname because of his humor, it certainly fits as he is a constant source of sarcastic comments and witty remarks.
Without him, the Mass Effect universe would be a lot darker of a place, and the games might no longer be considered Bioware's best. So for his contribution to the series, and the fight against the reapers, let's celebrate some of his most hilarious lines.
10 "What Could I Do Against Collectors, Break My Arm At Them?"
When The Collectors' invade the Normandy during Mass Effect 2, Joker saves the day by giving EDI full access to the ship's systems, thus enabling her to wipe the creatures out.
For a guy with a brittle bone disease and none of the galaxy's most powerful weapons, he does a great job. Not in Miranda's mind, however, as she criticizes his decision to unshackle the AI. He angrily and hilariously responds by pointing out how he stood no chance against the deadly monsters.
9 "Another Dangerous Alien Aboard, Commander. Thanks. Why Can't You Collect Coins Or Commemorative Plates Or Something?"
Many of Shepard's best companions throughout the series aren't human - arguably the better ones. And this is something that worries Joker at first, not just because of their species but also due to the fact they're all extremely dangerous.
The pilot even sarcastically asks Shepard to start collecting something other than murderous aliens. In fairness, Shepard does collect model ships, yet it doesn't completely distract him from his alien recruiting duties.
8 "If Your Plan To Invade A Planet Requires Strapping Guns To Your Kids' School Bus, Maybe It's A Bad Plan."
To stand a chance against the technologically advanced Geth, the Quarians need to use some ingenuity. One idea, for instance, is to make their civilian ships combat-ready by equipping them with weapons.
It's a technique that Joker and EDI aren't too fond of as, without armor, each spacecraft is very vulnerable, and the inclusion of guns just makes them targets. The pilot even gives a comical explanation as to why the plan to use them is flawed.
7 "Hey, Commander, We Got Garrus back! That's Great 'Cause He Was Totally My Favorite…With That Pole Up His A**..."
From their biology to their history, there are a lot of interesting things to learn about Turians. For instance, they're all uptight, that is according to Joker. He thinks this about their entire race, especially Garrus.
When the Turian rejoins the Normandy in the second game, Joker comments about how happy it makes him, a claim that is dripping with sarcasm. Thankfully, the duo's relationship gets better in later years.
6 "What, Does She Have A Swear Jar Or Something? 'Cause I'll Bet If We Emptied That Thing, We Could Afford Another Cruiser."
Jack is a loose cannon who has little time for political correctness. This is why it's so surprising that she eventually becomes a teacher. And along with her students, she joins the war effort.
When Joker pokes fun at her new position in the military, she manages to avoid replying with foul language in front of the kids. The pilot then jokes about how full a swear jar would be if she had one.
5 "He'll Have A Hell Of A Tombstone. 'Cured The Genophage' With A Little Asterisk, And Then, At The Bottom, It'll Say, 'Which He Also Created.'
Most fans would agree that one of the saddest deaths in the series is when Mordin sacrifices his life to cure the Genophage. While the crew is still mourning the loss of the Salarian, Joker lightens the mood a little.
He simply identifies the deceased scientist's unique legacy as being someone who contributed to both the cause and cure of the disease. You could fault the taste of the joke, but not its accuracy.
4 "So, Thessia, Huh? I Guess The Asari Are Wishing They Had Fewer Dancers And More Commandos Right About Now. Too Soon?"
Another occasion where Joker delivers a gag too soon is after the fall of Thessia. In Mass Effect 3, the Asari Homeworld gets invaded by a surplus of Reaper forces.
This prompts Joker to make remarks about the amount of Asari dancers there are in the universe. He's not wrong, as pretty much every bar you visit in the series has some of them. In comparison, Commandos are a rare sight.
3 "So If She Starts Claiming To Be The 'Vanguard Of Our Destruction,' I Call Shotgun On The First Lifeboat"
In Mass Effect 2, EDI mentions that she contains Reaper code that was recovered from Sovereign's wreckage.
It's a reveal that unnerves Joker a little, so he claims the first escape pod, in case she starts speaking like the now-destroyed Reaper. If it did occur, it would've robbed everyone of the Joker and EDI romance, which is among the best in the series.
2 "Hey, Commander, Y'know I Had My Doubts About The Council, But After Years Of Ignoring Your Warning, They're Finally Willing To Step Up And Tell Us They Just Can't Help."
The Reapers and Cerberus might cause Shepard many problems throughout the games, but nobody in the series is more annoying than the Council.
During the first two games, the Commander constantly warns them about the Reapers, and they do nothing. By the third instalment, though, the Reapers are hard to ignore. Yet initially, they still don't lend a hand to the only person capable of stopping them. And the pilot does what he does best by joking about the situation.
During Mass Effect 2's Collector invasion, Joker is hesitant to give EDI full access to the ship. It's understandable, as even though she's smarter than nearly every other character in the series, it's hard to know if an AI like her is truly trustworthy.
As it's the only way to save the Normandy, he does it. But during the process, he imagines what his fellow crewmates would say if EDI does enslave them all.
